Key Skills You'll Develop

OTDR Trace Reading

Interpret any OTDR trace with confidence — identify events, measure losses, and detect hidden faults.

Power Budget Analysis

Calculate and validate optical power budgets to ensure links meet performance requirements.

Systematic Troubleshooting

Apply a structured methodology to isolate and resolve low-light conditions efficiently.

Professional Documentation

Produce industry-standard test reports for Tier 1 and Tier 2 certification.

Course Curriculum

Day 1

Optical Theory & Signal Fundamentals

  • Light propagation in single-mode and multi-mode fibers
  • Understanding attenuation, dispersion, and loss mechanisms
  • Optical power budget design and calculation
  • dB, dBm units — practical application and conversions
  • Acceptable loss thresholds by network type and standard
Day 2

OTDR Mastery — Trace Analysis

  • OTDR operating principles and parameter configuration
  • Reading traces: events, reflections, ghosts, and dead zones
  • Identifying splice points, connectors, bends, and breaks
  • Bi-directional OTDR testing methodology
  • Hands-on lab: OTDR trace interpretation exercises
Day 3

Diagnosing Low-Light Conditions

  • Systematic approach to low-light troubleshooting
  • Common causes: dirty connectors, bad splices, macro-bends
  • Power meter and light source testing techniques
  • Visual fault locator (VFL) usage and limitations
  • Hands-on lab: diagnosing pre-configured fault scenarios
Day 4

Remediation, Optimization & Certification

  • Connector cleaning and inspection best practices
  • Re-splicing techniques for loss reduction
  • Route optimization for bend-sensitive installations
  • Tier 1 and Tier 2 testing and documentation standards
  • Final assessment — end-to-end diagnostic challenge

Prerequisites

  • Basic fiber optic knowledge (or PRO FIBER Fundamentals course)
  • Some field or lab experience with fiber networks
  • Familiarity with basic test instruments is helpful but not required

Lab Equipment Provided

  • OTDR platforms (EXFO MaxTester, VIAVI SmartOTDR)
  • Optical power meters and calibrated light sources
  • Visual fault locators (VFL)
  • Connector cleaning kits and supplies
  • Pre-configured fault simulation panels
