Tools & Materials Checklist
Complete list of tools and materials you need for fiber optic field work. All standards based on fusion splicing only — the industry standard for permanent fiber installations.
Universal Fiber Tools
These are the core tools every fiber optic technician needs regardless of job type. This is your base kit.
Fusion Splicer
Shop →Fujikura 90S / 70S+ or similar. The only accepted method for permanent fiber joins. Target splice loss ≤0.02 dB.
OTDR
Shop →VeEX, EXFO MaxTester, or VIAVI SmartOTDR. Required for fault localization, splice verification, and fiber certification.
Optical Power Meter (OPM)
Shop →Calibrated meter for measuring receive power at 1310/1490/1550/1577 nm. VeEX units support direct LL threshold measurement.
Light Source
Shop →Matched to your power meter wavelengths (1310/1550 nm SM). Used for insertion loss testing.
Visual Fault Locator (VFL)
Shop →Red laser (650 nm, 10 mW+) for tracing fiber, finding breaks and macro-bends.
Fiber Cleaver
Shop →Precision cleaver producing <1° end-face angle. Required for quality fusion splices.
Fiber Stripper
Shop →Three-hole stripper for removing coating layers (250µm → 125µm).
Connector Cleaning Kit
Shop →One-click cleaners (LC/SC), lint-free wipes, and IPA pens. Clean every connector, every time.
Splice Sleeves
Heat-shrink protection sleeves (60 mm / 2.4 in) for fusion splices. Always carry extra.
Cable Cutter / Kevlar Shears
Heavy-duty shears for cutting fiber cable jacket and aramid yarn.
Fiber Identification Tool
Shop →Non-intrusive identifier that detects signal direction and traffic presence on live fibers.
Label Maker / Printer
Brady BMP21 or Dymo. Required for port, cable, and enclosure identification.
Headlamp / Work Light
Hands-free illumination for manholes, pedestals, handholes, and dark closets.
Tool Bag / Kit Case
Shop →Organized carrying case for all fiber tools and consumables.
Reference Test Cables
Shop →Known-good launch and receive cables (SM, SC/APC or LC/APC). 2 per test kit.
Safety Equipment
Non-negotiable. These items are required on every job site.
Safety Glasses
ANSI Z87.1 rated. Fiber scraps can injure eyes.
Fiber Disposal Container
Sharps-style container for used fiber scraps. Never leave bare fiber loose.
Work Gloves
Cut-resistant gloves for cable pulling and handling.
Hi-Vis Vest
Required on most job sites and ROW work.
Hard Hat
Required for aerial, construction zones, and many ISP sites.
First Aid Kit
Basic kit with tweezers (for fiber splinters), bandages, antiseptic.
Materials by Work Type
Each job type requires different consumables and materials. Stock your vehicle based on your upcoming assignments.
